Jones' First Cereal

Although all the kids are changing at a rapid pace, Jones obviously changes the most these days. Currently, the ongoing debate in my head is whether or not I am losing my milk supply. I despise this part of nursing. On most days I am a confident mother, with clear beliefs on how to raise her children and a belief that I really do have all the answers to their needs(although sometimes I have to dig to find them)! But when it comes to milk production, I freak out and question myself and worry I am not providing enough. As I go through this mental battlefield, I have decided to begin Jones on cereal a few days before he turns 6 months. This is to also prolong nursing a bit and help fill him as I untangle myself from the (Am I working out too much or does the valve just turn off at 6 months). It bothered me to do this while Curt is out of town, but Curt would rather I feed him than fret all week...I appreciate that, honey, I really do.
Without another adult in the room to help document the momentous occasion, I was assisted by a 7 yr old and a 4 yr old. Not to mention, the 7 yr old was way more worried about the pictures she wanted to take on her camera and could care less what we got on ours. So off we go...

The first bite came as a surprise, as usual, but he managed it. You could tell the texture was strange and he wasn't exactly sure what to do with the cereal. The second bite went much like the first bite. Then came the 3rd bite. Holy cow, I have never seen a child shudder at the thought of eating. He cracked us all up. I would raise the spoon and he would cringe and shudder. I imagined it to be like watching someone eat balut (fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell). The shiver that starts at the base of your spine and works it's way up to your neck. It was hilarious! He couldn't even look at it, let alone eat it. Poor thing!

For those of you concerned, tonight's (Day 2 of cereal) cereal was received much better. No shuddering, just a few grimaces, but eventually he opened his mouth a few times for me. I consider it progress! Now...if he will go back to sleeping through the night, all will be well!
